Homogeneous Geostrophic Flows and Linear
Barotropic Waves
Arpit Agarwal
Homogeneous Geostrophic flows, which are homogeneous flows with small Ekman and Rossby Numbers, will be
discussed along with the governing equations. The generalized form of equations
for non-geostrophic flows will also be presented. I
will then talk about the Linear Barotropic waves. The study of these waves is a
wise approach to gain an insight into GFD by understanding the linear processes
first before exploring the complex non linear dynamics. Examples of linear
barotropic waves i.e. Kelvin waves and Inertia-Gravity (Poincare) waves will be
discussed along with the mathematical formulation.
